45 year old male.October last year I hurt my neck playing
45 year old male.October last year I hurt my neck playing golf and experienced tingling in my outer fingers followed by burning in the back of the neck. Scans indicated osteoarthritis with osteopytes, minor disc bulging and compression at C5/C6, C6/C7. This affected my outer forearms and fingers initially with stiffness, pins and needles and numbness in pinky and ring finger. I had no pain. Nerve studies indicated a potential issue with C7/C8/T1 (radiculopathy or anterior horn cell) but the mri scans results didn't correlate at this level. I had 4 surgeons and 2 neurologists stumped on what it could be. I tried conservative treatments such as massage and osteopath and after a neck manipulation my symptoms became worse, including bladder spasms and bowel issues. My weakness and stiffness progressed bilaterally to my outer legs with my right side worse than the left. The surgeons basically said will replace the discs and see if that helps being unsure As I was getting worse I was scared and opted for it. 6 weeks ago I had c5-c6, c6-C7 disc replacements. The ortho surgeon found inflammatory fluid around the spinal cord when he took the discs out. He told me this 2 1/2 weeks after at my first review.. This did not show up on 3 previous mris. After 2 weeks post surgery not only my original symptoms did not improve but I have experienced pins and needles, burning sensation and pain (particularly legs),from the surgery down all the way to my feet. My skin, muscles and tendons are progressively becoming stiffer (and I mean all muscles) I have been prescribed muscle relaxants which relieve them somewhat. They haven't prescribed anti inflammatories. It feels like the neck is tight in that area and I get pins and needles when I move especially bending forward. It also gets worse when heat is applied. My latest mri report on monday post surgery summary is: Mild C6/7 cervical canal stenosis with no evidence of associated myelomalacia. In the findings it states that there is incomplete effacement of the CSF surrounding the cervical cord at C6/C7 with subtle mass effect demonstrated. This was not on the mri 2 weeks ago or pre surgery. Could this be causing my issues? The surgeon has stated and by xray and ct scan that the discs are positioned perfectly. It looks like on the mri that the c6 vertebrae is almost pushed up and back slightly. The ostephytes in these areas were not ground off during the procedure. I also have a taste of blood down the back of my throat and mouth although none is there. Almost salty taste. Am I becoming a quadriplegic? … read more
