I have a typical trygeminal neuralgia. Are there any new meds similar to Lamictal but less strong?

Doctor's Assistant: Have you seen a doctor about this yet? What medications are you taking?

Yes have botox injectionS and been to neurological doctors. The drugs are usually too strong to function.

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

Yes, taking 300 MG X2 a day for bipolar diagnosed at age 17 and now 57.

Medication of choice for trigeminal neuralgia are carbamazepine (200–1,200 mg/day) and oxcarbazepine (600–1,800 mg/day). These in low doses are tolerated well.

The other effective treatment are; Gabapentin, Pregabalin and botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) shots.

Please note I have tried all of the typical medication listed above. Any other suggestions.

The other milder options are;

Baclofen

Pimozide

Topiramate,

Levetiracetam.

Some people are benefitted by;

phenytoin, fosphenytoin, clonazepam, valproic acid, misoprostol, tocainide, topical capsaicin cream, intranasal lidocaine, tizanidine, sumatriptan, and amitriptyline.
