I just had an MRI and is showed 2 punctate foci of increased FLAIR signal noted within the right frontal white matter and signal punctate focus within the left frontal white matter. Findings most consistent with nonspecific gliosis. Can you tell me what this means? I had relatively mild headaches for a few weeks that have gotten even more mild recently. Also had some very sporatic left sided arm and leg tingling.

Doctor's Assistant: Is the headache episodic or daily? And what about nausea?

No nausea at all. Headaches were each day, never severe and did not limit daily routine at all. Sort of could not shake it.

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

I am glad you asked. I had blood work that showed an elevated platelet count (around 800) which a hematologist put me recently on hydroxyurea and a baby aspirin each day. It was a preliminary diagnosis of essential thrombocytosis.

Hello. Gliosis suggests scar tissue in the brain, possibly the result of tiny injuries from small vessel disease, most commonly due to inflammation or narrowing. White matter changes are commonly seen in those with risk factors such as longstanding hypertension, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, autoimmune disorders, even migraine syndromes. The thrombocytosis could be a factor if it has been present for awhile and was leading to clumping or blockage of blood flow in some of the tiny blood vessels of the brain.

Would the clumping or blocking come up on MRI as "Punctate Foci of increased FLAIR signal". So if my platelets were very high, you could have small clumping and blocking in the very small vessels which would cause headaches and the tingling symptoms I was having? That seems to make sense. Or am I off base here? I very much appreciate the help.
Neurologist: Dr. Bob, Neurologist (MD) replied 6 months ago

No, you are right on target. The problem is that your symptoms and the MRI findings are both non-specific, so while causation or connection might be reasonable, there is no way to know for sure.
