Received report tonight about 7year old sons EEG.States the following - EEG is borderline normal except for the presence of single vertex sharp wave in sleep that has spikes incorporated in a generalised distribution. The findings would raise the possibility of a tendency to have a generalised seizure disorder but no frank evidence of seizure evidence seen.

why did your son need to get an EEG test?

Ask Your Own Neurology Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
School noted he appeared to ‘zone out’ at times and we also noted it. Plus my mother is epileptic also.
Neurologist: Dr. David, Board Certified MD replied 8 months ago

I see.

so there is a family history

the EEG scan shows no active seizure activity.

he will need to be monitored

if he continues to zone out, he may need an EEG scan during one of these zone out periods to check for abscance seizures.

but does he have severe fatigue or lethargy after these "zone out" episodes?

after seizures, patients have a post ictal phase when they are very very fatigued.

He has days where he appears very fatigued. Just kinda sits and stares. It’s very unpredictable. He is being investigated for other issues also relating to Elevated IGE levels and hypersensitivity despite negative allergy tests also.
Neurologist: Dr. David, Board Certified MD replied 8 months ago

I see.

it sounds like he is in good care

I would not stress about that one vertex sharp wave.

that could have been an anomaly in the EEG.

hopefully he won't have a seizure episode.

even if he does develop seizures, there are medications which can help him.

Thankyou, that’s great!Just to clarify and put myself at ease - it’s not saying he has a seizure disorder, just showing signs of it despite no seizure activity or a tendency? Just so confused.Could you just give me a brief rundown of what they saw or what it means with the wave and spikes when he was asleep?
Neurologist: Dr. David, Board Certified MD replied 8 months ago

this is a non specific finding.

the spike could mean he may be more prone to seizure activity

or it may just be a fluke.

he can ask his doctors to repeat the sleep EEG scan and see if the same finding is seen.
