Customer Question
Hi - I have...

Hi - I have a very similar MRI report to the one posted - and I am almost 69 - much younger than the patient described. What is the significance of mild general parenchymal loss at my age? Thank you.

Doctor's Assistant: Do you have frequent headaches? Any issues with coordination or balance?

Occasional headaches; I have fallen a number of times but think is because of loose ligaments (ankles turn). I have occasional episodes of vertigo lasting about a week (3-4 times per year).

Doctor's Assistant: Is the headache episodic or daily? And what about nausea?

Episodic - get nauseous when having vertigo - not otherwise

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

4 concussions as a child; mother and grandmother died from dementia (autopsy for my mother indicated it was not alzheimer's). Breast cancer survivor - had surgery and chemo.

Hello. Mild parenchymal loss is common starting at about 50. It may be slowly progressive in some individuals such that the shrinkage is noticeable on MRI by the 60s. This is likely a combination of genetics and risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, migraines, etc. There is typically no need to be worried and nothing that can be done for this other than risk factor mitigation.
