I started last May with what I thought was a pinched nerve…

Customer Question
I started last May...

I started last May with what I thought was a pinched nerve on back of my neck on right side. Was given pain relievers, then a 1 week steroid to reduce inflammation. After months of pain and physical therapy and posture exercising, pain has moved into left hand leaving it tingly & numb. I am unable to sleep laying down because arm goes into hard sleep and revives itself with a lot of pain. I'm feeling the pinch is coming from upper arm area and my funny bone seems to be exposed to anything that touches it. My fingers & thumb are so swollen & tight, I feel like my skins on fire & is ready to burst. I do my hand & finger movements but seem to feel my muscles are shrinking daily. This has affected my work performance as well. I'm living in California & waiting for open enrollment on insurance, as my other policy was worthless.

Doctor's Assistant: How long have you been dealing with the skin issue? Have you noticed any major changes in your overall skin or nails recently?

I was diagnosed with Raynaud Syndrome in August. I don't doubt that as I grew up back east. have always had frozen fingertips. this goes away when they warm up. but my left hand is a completely different pain. my fingers go red, feel like they are on fire but are cold to touch. my physical therapist was always checking my nail beds. the only way to describe skin is like fibro myalga. if I am spelling that right.my index finger skin is so tight it looks shiny. I can not grip anything with my thumb at all. too painful.

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?

Physical therapy has ruled out carpel tunnel. I am in my late 50's and was told after my cat scan, that they have seem much worse neck depression.

and what did they show?

have you had an EMG?

Ask Your Own Neurology Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
1 MRI I paid for. A week later, VCMC Hospital, another MRI, neck & upper back. Cat scan. & EKG. only to be told by neurologist that he has seen worse. My personal Dr suggested physical therapy, which I have been doing. I lost my employment after 17 years and was told I missed California Covered open enrollment. Purchased some insurance from out of state that claimed they covered mostly everything but found it covered nothing I needed when I actually needed to use it. I am at this moment uninsured and paying physical therapy out of pocket.

So no EMG?

Ask Your Own Neurology Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
What is an EMG? they probably did that too. Just not knowledgeable on terminology.
Neurologist: Dr. Phil, MD, Medical Doctor replied 7 months ago

It is where they put the pins in your arms and measure nerve impulses

Ask Your Own Neurology Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
No. I DoD not experience that.
Neurologist: Dr. Phil, MD, Medical Doctor replied 7 months ago

That is a test that absolutely should have been done especially when trying to determine where the nerve issue is coming from

Ask Your Own Neurology Question
Customer reply replied 7 months ago
The hospital told me that the expenses would really start piling without insurance. Maybe once I get some that may have been next step.
Neurologist: Dr. Phil, MD, Medical Doctor replied 7 months ago

That is what I would do next

we need to find which nerve this is and where it is coming from

is this helpful?
