Hello and welcome Erik. I'm Dr Chip

Yes--that nerve root compression can indeed affect the hamstrings and calf muscles with cramping.

Physical therapy can help with the problem, and muscle relaxants like Flexeril can help

MRI report says I got a herniated disk. Do you still recommend Physical Therapy or Surgery(lamiscitomy)?
Expert:  Dr Chip (M.D.) replied 7 months ago.

I would refer you to a physiatrist--a physical medicine and rehabilitation MD specialist--for a customized physical therapy program that should alleviate your symptoms

Surgery should only be considered if that conservative approach didn't help
