Customer Question

During the day, a swollen pocket-like area develops on the inside of my left ankle between the ankle joint and the sole of the foot. Nothing like this occurs on the right ankle. The swelling goes down at night. What would cause this? Why would it occur only on the left ankle if it were gout or some similar condition?
JA: Any recent injuries? How long have you been dealing with the swelling?
Customer: No recent injuries. Been dealing with it about two weeks.
JA: Anything else in your medical history you think the doctor should know?
Customer: No, I am a healthy 75 year old; very active; never sick.

Hello, this is Dr. David. I am reviewing your question now and will be with you momentarily.

it could be a synovial cyst developing during the day in just one ankle.

an ultrasound of that area can check for a synovial cyst potentially.

at age 75, you can develop swelling of cysts from your joint space, even if you are very active and very healthy.
