I have been diagnosed with a full/partial rotator cuff tear,

Customer Question

I have been diagnosed with a full/partial rotator cuff tear, supraspinatus tendon. I am on a wait list for an orthoscopic repair within the next 3 months. It is a wear and tear injury due to progressive degenerative neck disease. I am a female/57 years old. I had some physio treatments prior to seeing the orth surgeon. I was also recommended exercises (scapular retraction and shoulder flexion/abduction with weights). The question I forgot to ask the surgeon - should I be doing these exercises with this type of tear/my age? It is not overly painful at the moment, just burns. I am going to Europe in June and have requested a cortisone shot before I go. I would appreciate your comments on this.

Hi there,
This is Dr Basu, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.
I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Yes you can continue with these exercises.

They strengthen the surrounding muscles and ligaments and thus compensate for torn tendon.

You should avoid these exercises for a week following the cortisone injection.

That is to prevent any rerupture of the tendon.
Best wishes,
