Customer Question

I had ammonia smelling salts pored in my nose when I was 6 years old(by my young brother). I am 76 now. Could I still be experiencing pain now to the Nasopalatine nerve after all these years. The pain in dry and burning mouth. This just started over the last few years.

HI. Welcome to Just Answer. I am a board certified US trained Neurologist. Treatment of Burning Mouth Syndrome has been difficult over the years. Recently, there may have been a breakthrough, where it became known that the rate of salivation plays a large role in exacerbations of the pain associated with this disease. There is a newer stimulation device to increase ductal secretions. I will try to find that product for you.

Here is a very recent article on all the therapeutic options in treating Burning Mouth Syndrome

Here is another article on that topic that I had seen in the review literature on treatment of Burning Mouth. It focuses on Xerostomia, or a dryness of the mouth that seems to correlate to symptoms.

Please take a look at those two articles, then get back to me with questions about your condition, if you have questions about the meds listed just ask and I will return to answer. If satisfied with this information, please remember to rate my service as that is how I am compensated for my work. Dr Frank
