staring spells also known as absence seizures are not treated with trileptal since this drug can make them worse and therefore it is contraindicated.
since you said there was a spike (and not spikes, esp. on both sides), she may have complex partial seizures which can look like staring spells sometimes. in that case trileptal could be helpful but not all patients respond the same way.
it is important that she is evaluated for presence of learning disability - in addition to being properly evaluated and treated for epilepsy - because appropriate approach will help her teachers, you and her as well.
if she hasn't been seen by a pediatric neurologist ant an academic medical center, it would be prudent to get a referral.

if this pedi neurologist does not think she has spikes and does not know or is not sure if her spells look like seizures clinically, then you should get another opinion. you can take the veeg she had on a disk to another consultant for review.
it is a bit of a leap to go from saying someone has epilepsy to they have no seizures at all.
a spike on eeg can be suspicious or epileptiform or a normal variant.
fyi, first eeg can be normal in 50% of people with epilepsy.
there are other drugs than trileptal - zarontin, lamictal, etc. for absence and she can also try topamax or keppra if these are not generalized absence seizures but rather complex partial ones.
