Hello,

The muscle contractures due to brain anoxia indicate that there has been significant damage to certain areas of the brain.
It is very encouraging that his congnitve function and speech are improving.
If done early, Botox injections can be very helpful in relieving spasticity, or muscle stiffness.
If muscle contractures are chronic, joints incur permanent shortening and in those patients Botox can't help but rather surgical leghtening is necessary. So, it is important to decide on Botox intervention sooner than later.

Hydrotherapy can be very helpful as can be massage and other complementary medicine treatments including acupuncture.
Passive motion exercises are very important on daily basis to maintain joint mobility and preserve as much function as possible.

Hope this helps.

With the botox injections, will he be able to stand or will it just weaken the muscles and we would have to retrain the muscle?

What about muscle stimulation?

Any joint vitamins can help?

Neurologist: Dr. Sophie :: Neurology, Neurologist (MD) replied 8 years ago
This is where dosing is very important: the specialist needs to inject enough Botox to help relax the stiffness but at the same time not produce muscle weakness.
Sometimes it may take a couple of appointments to find the right balance of dose and which muscles need to be injected.
Physical therapist can perform electrical muscle stimulation on muscles that are shrinking because they are not being used and help relax the muscle spasms and tension. They can also recommend a device type that can be used at home.
If he has an underlying joint problem, glucosamine-chondroitin supplents can be helpful.
It may be prudent to consider this supplement to prevent any forseeable joint damage.

You asked "

For short term memory progress, are there any specific vitamins that can help with that or any prescription drugs? For improved speech, any vitamins or prescription drugs can help? Do Urias pressure splints work for muscle contractions?

"

Vitamins help for memory if patients are deficient - so check thiamine and vit B12 level.
Speech needs to be addressed by speech therapy; there are no vitamins or drugs to treat speech pathology.
Urias splints are used to help moblize muscles closer to the trunk; a physical therapist or PM&R specilaist needs to determine if he will benefit based on his examination.

And most recently he has grabbed my hands after speaking with him. He has also seemingly what looked like move his eyeballs when speaking but its still hard to tell. I would like to know if there is anything I can do or to know if maybe if he is trying to come out of the coma .
