Customer Question
My wife is having trouble...
My wife is having trouble with her taste buds. She can't taste anything and what she can taste is salty. This has been going on for about 3 weeks. She went to she her doctor and he said he wanted a stole sample. The sample came back normal but he won't talk to her about her lack of tasting. Any suggestions? Thanks, Brad

Hello,

Thanks for your question.

Loss of taste sensation & salty taste can be produced by a number of conditions:

1. Tongue infection--commonest cause. Fungal or bacterial.

2. Dental diseases

3. Sinus infection --Viral or bacterial

4. Medications--certain medications can alter taste sensation.

5. Autoimmune disorders-- Sjogren;s syndrome can cause this symptoms as presenting symptoms. This is an immune system disorder.

6. Neurological--uncommonly stroke can also affect taste sensation.

7. Very rare: lung neoplasm---there has been one case report of lung cancer presenting with loss of taste sensation.

Tongue infection can be treated easily with antifungal & antibacterial medications.

Other possibilities require appropriate work up.

i don't know if your getting this. she has white spots on her tongue. is that tongue disease? what is the treatment?
Neurologist: Dr Basu, Board Certified MD replied 8 years ago

I am sorry that you had to wait long for my reply. The question was in different category. I could not reply back timely.

Due to the white spots in her tongue, fungal infection is likely.

Hence, Nystatin swish & swallow or diflucan orally (200 mg daily for 7 days) should be effective.

Another possibility, if the above treatment does not work is leukoplakia, a premalignant lesion. This can be diagnosed by sending a biopsy of the white patch.

Please consider seeing a oral surgeon in that case.
