Hi,

Have you seen a neurologist?

How often do these episodes happen?

How long do they last?
Ask Your Own Neurology Question
Customer reply replied 7 years ago

yes

several last year and again two weeks ago

several mins.

These episodes sound like they could be epileptic in nature.
These type of spells with autonomic symptoms (rapid, irregular pulse, sweating, etc.) could occur in temporal lobe epilepsy because of proximity to insula, a region in the temporal lobe.
At this point I would repeat your EEG and, more importantly do a brain MRI with attention to mesial temporal structures.

I hope this helps.

doctors ruled out strokes, heart attacks, epileptic seizures
A normal EEG does not rule out seizures. More than 50% of pateints with seizures have normal EEGs.

Head CT is only good for ruling out most brain tumors, bleeding in the brain and bigger strokes. You need a brain MRI to rule out other abnormalities.

i had a MRI of the brain done last year after my first episode
Then you really should have a repeat EEG now. It greatly increases the chances of capturing abnormal rhythm.
Have your brain MRI reviewed by a neuroradiologist.
If these were more frequent they could do video EEG telemetry but since they are not, they yield would be low.

because of all the extensive testing that was done, my doctors are leaning more towards panic attacks or anxiety. I think there's more to it. My episodes been happening around my period.

OK.

These episodes do sound like panic attacks.

The thing is, temporal lobe seizures can present like panic attacks.

Estrogen/hormone levels can influence frequency of seizures in female patients. These are called catamenial.

Best wishes.

do i take panic attacks pills for these episodes?

could you explain more on catamenial?

yes you can take panic attack pills for them.
catamenial = occuring around menstrual cycle

I'm sorry, I thank you for your time and advise you have given me hope. If i need you for more information how can i contact you again.

Hi again and thank you.

If your neurologist is convinced that these are anxiety attacks and there is some predictability because they tend to occur around your period, you can consider taking an anxiolytic medication (ex. Xanax, Ativan) a few days before, during and after to prevent them from happening and avoid the stress of going through them.
If these are epileptic in nature, as they might be, you would need to be on an antiepileptic medication as they impair your consciousness. If this happens when you drive, climb a ladder, etc - you get my point...
If you find that they are happening more often, I would consider video EEG telemetry -- you get admitted to an EEG unit, stay there for a few days and everyone keep their fingers crossed it will happen at least once so they can be recorded and evaluated.

You can contact me by following the directions below -- they will bring you back here and your message will get to me. You also have an option of requesting me.

Good luck. Let me know how things are when you get a chance.
