2005 fxdc random miss and popping with speedo dropping to zero not dependent on load or speed
JA: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on?
Customer: popping from exhaust but only for a couple of revolutions
JA: What is the model of your '05 motorcycle?
Customer: fxdc
JA: Are you fixing your bike yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: had auto electrician check and clean all connections and fuses cleaned carb and air cleaner
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: seems to be total power cut as needle drops to zero

it sounds like an electrical problem. it could be anything from a intermittent failure of an ignition component to a problem with the voltage supplied to the ignition components and even a wiring problem.

to find out, we need to start with the system voltage and make sure it's ok.

measure the battery voltage under the following conditions:

- ignition OFF.

- ignition ON.

- with the start button depressed.

- with the engine at about 2,000 rpm (fast idle).
