Customer Question

97 vs800gl It started with a "hic-up" which got worse to where it would stall. I replaced plugs, wet down wires and coils no spark leakage. I also changed oil & filter(low oil sensor?). After warming up, it backfires and I seem to lose 1 cylinder-no power and will stall. It will restart but runs poorly. I don't want to through parts at it. Please help!

Hi Robert, I’m Louie. Sorry you had to wait awhile but I’ll do my best to help.

Initially and if the sparks are present and consistent, then it would appear to be a fuel delivery/starvation issue. Proposed preliminary checks (if have not been done) on suspects:

  • • drain-clean tank and replace with fresh fuel (even if just to eliminate as a suspect);
  • • check/clean fuel path (least likely);
  • • check/clean carbs (likely);
  • • test fuel pump output pressure (most likely).
