I have a 96 Polaris 400 express quad. running poorly.

i have a 96 Polaris 400 express quad. running poorly. drained tank. new fuel. running premix, bypassing oil system. removed checked carb out. clean and not plugged up. floats good., new plug. idles very rough, smokes badly and running very rich, what should I check for?

Initially, if fuel quality/supply/delivery has been ruled out, then the other possibilities would be electrical/ignition and/or engine internals/combustion.

Proposed further checks (if have not been done):

  • • compression and leak-down test;
  • • clean the bottom of the crankcase and the exhaust;
  • • re-check the intake manifold and coupling to the carb for a potential vacuum leak;
  • • multi-meter reading of the battery voltage on the possibility of over/under-voltage.
