Customer Question

1997 vn1500D classic (carb, SINGLE stator) - changed the engine to year 2000 (carb, DUAL stators) - engine starts but only fires the rear cylinder.....igniters, coils, etc all test good.....what's wrong?

Hi and welcome to JustAnswer,
Thank you for the question and your patience. Should you still need assistance for information purposes only...
Initially and since there are two (2) pulsers/pickup coils, then the IC igniter must also be replaced. The single unconnected wire from the stator located pickup coil would have to trigger the 2000 version of the IC igniter to fire the front.

Im sorry but this is all techno-Greek to me.....could you please expand and simplify your answer please? I need to know specifically in steps what I must do to get both cylinders firing .......tell what parts I'll need etc and how to connect it all Thanks

Change also the igniter (if have not done so) to that of the 2000 model.

You have done this yourself successfully? I want to be sure before I buy a $200 part

Not specifically with a 1977 + 2000 engine but on others; yes. It also would require hardwiring an additional wire from the 2000 engine/stator to the new igniter since the harness would be lacking this wire.
It would help if you can take clear/closeup pictures (lots of it):
• of the old engine/stator wire and the old igniter;
• of the new engine/stator wire and the old igniter.
Please post these pictures as well.
