My speedometer sometimes starts jumping, occasionally drops

Customer Question

My speedometer sometimes starts jumping, occasionally drops to 0 and stays for a while then starts working again. Don't want to be without cruise control.

your speedo is quite simple, meaning, it has few parts and very few possible failures.- check the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) in the transmission, near the starter. they sometimes collect wear products that produce a fuzz ball on the sensor. check for any physical damage.- check the electrical connections on the back of the speedo. tighten any loose connections.- the speedo unit itself can be removed and tested on a bench tester by a HD dealership. let me know if you need more help.Steve
