Customer Question

I recently picked up a 2007 Yamaha v-star 650 w/7k miles. The bike runs well, but during last three rides, the engine light comes on after 4-5 miles of cruising. When I kill the engine the check engine light blinks 4 times (slowly) followed by 2 faster blinks. This only happens after I've been riding for a bit. During the normal warm up period the check engine light only comes on for a brief moment and turns off (which I understand as being normal startup procedure.

It is a speed sensor error indicating problems with the speedo cable or possibly the speedometer or ECU (computer).
Three blinks is a problem with the throttle position sensor while four
indicates "speed sensor" problem.
Checking for loose wiring and connectors might help.
Might be a bad speedo drive on the wheel or faulty cable too.
Check those out and clean wiring connectors to ECM and speedo area.
