my 2003 sportsman 500 wont idle with choke off and back fires

This answer was rated:

my 2003 sportsman 500 won't idle with choke off and back fires but runs and idles good with choke on

if it will not idle with out the choke that indicates a pugged idle circuit in the carb. usually debris or old gummy fuel in the pilot jet #32, from the unit setting.

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

for one thats not my carb

That is what came on a 2003 Polaris sportsman 500. i checked on the Polaris Dealer parts fich.

is it a mikuni carb?

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

try year 2000

for a 2000 sportsman 500 the pilot jet is #26

thats the one so have to yank carb

yes to get to the inside of the carb to inspect and clean any debris out of the carb. I would recommend cleaning the carb by disassembling the carb and dipping it in carb dip. i use Yamaha carb dip mixed with 50/50 warm water as it will not harm rubber parts. then use a carb spray so you can see the fluid spray through the jets and passages to confirm they are open.
