hello

are these stock pipes, or aftermarket pipes? any popping or dead spots, or running issues? are they coloring on the output end or by the head?

Motorcycle Mechanic: Eric, Technician replied 8 years ago
do you have saddlebags?
Ask Your Own Motorcycle Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago
yes soft ones
Motorcycle Mechanic: Eric, Technician replied 8 years ago
ok, that tarnishing comes from high heat. if you did not have saddlebags i would say internally the mufflers are failing and too much heat is collecting in them and overheating tarnishes the metal on those. but the saddlebags over top of them dont allow them to completely cool as they would with open air, so again the overheating tarnishes the finish. there is a product called "blue away" that can help get rid of some of the discoloring but may not get all depending on how far along they are.

someone told me it was running rich causes that but ur answer sounds logical so the mufflers could be getting wore out and not helping
Motorcycle Mechanic: Eric, Technician replied 8 years ago
Typically a rich running bike will run cooler. A lean condition would cause excessive heat. Dirty carbs are usually the culprit. If this were the case the headpipes would be blue and you would have popping and dead spots. This is very common with saddlebags and these bikes. I appreciate the accept, as well as the question. Thank you.
