I have an 89 harley...

I have an 89 harley 883 sportster with custom straight pipes. I want to put the original pipes back on. Have all the parts, but is thier anything I should know first, for example jetting/carb issues. Many thanks

Hi Cory,

a return to the original pipes will result in richer jetting.

replace the pipes with new exhaust gaskets.

if you can tell me what size jets you have I will advise you on what, if any, jetting changes to be made.

Is that richer jetting in O2 or fuel?

will this require adjustment or new part.

The top speed is around 70, which is fine except when on interstate. Should this be better and if so, will the original pipes help with speed and mileage because it only has a small tank?

Will I be able to keep the forward controls with original pipes? Foward controls are mounted on a straight bar, just inside the frame?

I don't know current jetting but can you tell me what I need to do to get it back to original jetting ratio?

Cory,

when referring to the air/fuel ratio, we refer to fuel only. we can adjust how much fuel goes in......we're usually stuck with whatever air is there.

stock jets for you bike are 175 main, 45 slow. I would start there, then have the air/fuel ratio checked on a dyno with an exhaust gas analyzer. you may be able to go even leaner and improve your fuel mileage further.

the original pipes will increase your mid range engine performance and should help with fuel mileage. you probably have larger jets installed than the ones listed above.

you should be able to attain a top speed higher than 70.

the original pipes should not interfere with your forward controls. the brackets used were designed for use with the stock pipes.
