Customer Question
Won't start. Mechanic's Assistant:...

Won't start.

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the battery, particularly the terminal connections? Are they corroded?

Yup. New battery. Tight, clean connections. I originally thought one of the starter connections might be loose. The one that seems like a clip on to the solenoid actually was. I tightened it. No change.

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model/year of your Mitsubishi?

1997 Montero LS. 3500 gas. 229,000 miles. Runs great.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Montero yourself? What have you tried so far?

Always! I've had current leak issues that I never totally solved with Doug. Swapped out the ignition about a year ago. Did help. Cleaned as many grounds as I could find. That is not an issue. Now starter won't engage.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

I strongly suspect I need a starter. I've read a previous post/chat with Doug. He says there's enough room to get the left side bolt out without removing exhaust. No wsy!

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

There are several things that can cause a no crank condition and it's going to require some electrical testing to determine what is going on. It may very well be the starter but it could also be the ignition switch, transmission range sensor, wiring, the starter relay, a cable or connection issue.

Are you hoping to do the required electrical testing yourself?

Today I was able to remove, clean and reattach the starter connections. No change. Just one click. Of course, the exhaust crosses right over the left sided starter bolt. No way that's coming out without removing exhaust. Not much thought went into that design...

Where's the starter relay on this machine? Inside engine compartment or just below radio? Its a 1997 3500
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Also, where's the grounding strap from engine bay to body?
Mitsubishi Mechanic: sprinkles08, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

Do you have a digital voltmeter?

Ask Your Own Mitsubishi Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
I do. Battery voltage is 12.65. Good continuity from post to all connections at the battery. I haven't checked current at the starter connections.
Mitsubishi Mechanic: sprinkles08, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

What you want to do is voltage drop test the engine ground, starter positive cable, and then ensure there is battery voltage on the solenoid wire at the time the starter will not engage. If all is ok and the engine is physically able to turn then the starter can be condemned.

Of course, the real problem here is removing the starter without removing the exhaust.
Mitsubishi Mechanic: sprinkles08, ASE Certified Technician replied 11 months ago

It doesn't call for exhaust removal but you can do so if you on't feel you can clear it.
