Was the vehicle starting normally prior to the battery replacement (except for perhaps slow cranking etc), or was the battery replaced trying to correct the no start condition?

Thanks, ***** ***** condition formed without relation to the battery it sounds like.
What exactly happens when you turn the key? Does the starter not do anything but the dash lights stay on, does the whole car literally seem to go dead and if so is it when the key hits "on" or "Start"?
