The key stores the security data that is checked by the computer to allow/disallow starting of the engine, so damage to the key is definitely a concern.
How exactly is it broken? Is the head missing completely or is it just cracked/loose? If it is cracked/loose, are the "guts" of the key still inside it, the part with the buttons and the light etc?
