Word is freezing. i haven't saved my document recently

Technician's Assistant: When was the last time you updated the Operating System (OS) on your Mac or device?

Quite a while ago

My document was last saved to a usb stick. the usb is currently plugged into my computer

I am very sorry about your issues. Few things first:

  1. Are you using Windows Vista, 7, 8 or 10?
  2. What version of MS Word are you using?

If Word is not responding, you have no other option but to force it to close. Depending on your settings, Word may have saved a copy of your open document when you re-open Word.

Thank you for writing back with that information. Since your Word stopped working (Not responding), your only option is to FORCE QUIT it.

After closing MS Word, please wait for at least 3 minutes, and close other open programs as well to free up system resources. After that 3 minutes waiting, open MS Word again and see if your "unsaved document" is loaded automatically for your review depending on your auto-recovery settings.

This file that will open automatically when you open Word is the "last saved" version of your file. You just need to check its content and SAVE AS the file with a NEW file name. Then compare it to its other version and decide which one to keep.
