Mac Microsoft Excel 2011 14.3.4 when I have several files

Customer Question

Mac Microsoft Excel 2011 14.3.4
when I have several files open, even after closing some, then quitting, and restarting, something triggers even the closed files to reopen the next time I launch Excel. How do I control which files are reopened so that the number (now 15) doesn't increase?
