it is a macbook pro, but I was working in a word document

when you restart your word program it will ask for save. If you are not able to save the file last time.

that did not work. WHen I reopened word, it did not prompt me to save the last file

The search bar will be at the top of the screen on the right and type *. docx and hit enter. if not.

Please see auto recover option. If it is not turn on, then you can't recover them.
To see if the Auto-recover feature is active in Word, you would need to click on the
Disk icon entitled Save

Once in the Save window, just check the Save AutoRecover info every:
check box and select the amount of time you want your Word document to be saved
