1997 mercury cougar turn signals not working

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the fuse?

I checked all fuses and bulbs, all looked good. I replaced the flasher unit under the dash, blinkers then worked, but not brake light. I then tested the hazards, which worked erratically each time I pressed the button. I then rechecked the turn signals, which now were again not working.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Cougar yourself? What have you tried so far?

I checked all fuses and bulbs, all looked good. I replaced the flasher unit under the dash, blinkers then worked, but not brake light. I then tested the hazards, which worked eratically each time I pressed the button. I then rechecked the turn signals, which now were again not working. I noticed the hazard button was sticking a bit, so I spayed a little wd40 on it, and let it sit overnight. Next day, I worked the hazard button up and down a few times, hazard lights then stared functioning normally, but stiil no brake or turn signals. I replaced the flasher again, brake light then started working.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

I noticed the hazard button was sticking a bit, so I spayed a little wd40 on it, and let it sit overnight. Next day, I worked the hazard button up and down a few times, hazard lights then stared functioning normally, but stiil no brake or turn signals. I replaced the flasher again, brake light then started working.

This is the full description, initial entry area was too limited:
1997 mercury cougar turn signals not working:
This car was sitting unused for about a year, trying to get it back on road. On inspection I saw that the brake light and turn signals were not working. I didn't check the hazard lights at this point. I checked all fuses and bulbs, all looked good. I replaced the flasher unit under the dash, blinkers then worked, but not brake light. I then tested the hazards, which worked erratically each time I pressed the button. I then rechecked the turn signals, which now were again not working. I noticed the hazard button was sticking a bit, so I spayed a little wd40 on it, and let it sit overnight. Next day, I worked the hazard button up and down a few times, hazard lights then stared functioning normally, but still no brake or turn signals. I replaced the flasher again, brake light then started working. So now, everything is working except the turn signals.

Hello, I have repaired over 30000 vehicles in my career and I need to ask you questions since I am not there in person to gather facts, data, or to test your vehicle. I may ask you to perform testing in my stead. If testing is needed and you would rather not perform testing, I can give my best advice.

yOU SAY HAZARDS DID NOT WORK AND THEN DID WORK AFTER A COUPLE OF TIMES? mAY I HAVE VIN NUMBER

vin is 1MELM 6249V H6292 18. Hazards worked differently each time i pushed the button. Just one side would blink, then nothing, then just other side, etc. Until I sprayed a little wd40. Everything is now working; headlights, hi beams, parking lights, brake lights, backup lights.... except the turn signals. No blinking inside or out, no click noise from the flasher.

replace the turn signal stalk....if the hazards work awkwardly thats a tail tell sign of the turn signal assy bad....high fail rate lol...the turn signals may bea flasher but probably the turn signals stalk will take care fo that too...play a round with switch(jiggle connections while trying to operate the different function) and you may get it working again

Ask Your Own Mercury Question

remeber the high beams work out that switch which is why you have not other lights like head parking etc
