Customer Question

We have a 2004 Mercury mountaineer awd. As my wife was leaving the grocery store it made a grinding noise and does not drive at all. You can put it in drive and the transmission shifts and sounds fine. Is it the transfer case? And can it be bypassed and only have rear wheel drive?

Hi. It is possible that it is the transfer case. But more commonly the front driveshafts are known for binding up. You can remove the front driveshaft and see what that does. And check it while its out to make sure it moves freely on the ends.
