Hi, I need a Sable...
Hi, I need a Sable transmission expert.
1998 Sable, DOHC, 24 valve.
TCC is engaging when stopping. Jerks and stalls.
Here is what we know:
Car shifts well, OD works.
-code is p0172, TCC solenoid failed ON (this is only code)
-flashing OD light after a while
-TCC solenoid replaced, no difference.
-Disconnecting the transaxle harness connector at the trans makes it mostly okay (very slight stutter), only first and reverse work.
-cutting TCCS wire (vio/yel) no effect, not better not worse.
-at connector, all soleniods seem okay for resistance. No shorts to each other or to ground/hot. TCCS equals 16 ohms. EPCS equals 5 ohms. Shifters equal 18 ohms. TFT 5 to 32k based on temp.
-cutting TCCS/EPCS power wire (red pin7) mostly eliminates stalls (very slight stutter), gives harsh shifts
-PCM doesn't pull TCCS to ground at low speed. Only at higher speeds, and then pulse mode seems all okay.
Conclusions:
-Studder seems to go away at higher pressure (e.g. cut EPS or disconnected connector)
-PCM seems okay since TCCS signal seems all appropriate.
Questions:
-If it isn't TCCS, what is causing clutch to kick in?
-Can any other sensor be the problem?
-Anything else to test or try?
-Any other fix than replacing transmission? Replace just torque converter?

I have no idea where p0172 came from. I checked the whole thing.

OK I think that you have covered everything other that a mechanical failure. It sounds like you may have a bad torque converter. Of course it could be a lose of fliud pressure to the converter but I have had allot of converters fix this problem.
