2005 mercury mountaineer: V8..AWD..mile..front end..a smooth ride…

I have a 2005 mercury...
I have a 2005 mercury mountaineer V8 with a full time AWD system. My AWD system binds up during the first mile or so, you can hear and feel the front end fighting itself around corners, especially slow tight corners, and then the AWD disables itself, resulting in a smooth ride, but something is obviously amiss....any thoughts? The traction control also turns itself off, and it flashes a warning that the AWD is disabled.

Nope...nothing has changed.

Ford has a technical service bulletin out for a concern very similar to what you are describing. The problem is either a software issue with the 4X4 module or the rear ABS sensor. Here is a copy of the TSB.

TSB
05-3-8
  • INCREASED TURNING EFFORT DURING LOW SPEED SHARP TURNS - FALSE 4X4 ENGAGEMENT
Publication Date: February 4, 2005

FORD:2004-2005 Explorer
MERCURY:2004-2005 Mountaineer

This article supersedes TSB 04-26-08 to update the service procedure.

ISSUE:

Some 2004-2005 Explorer/Mountaineer 4x4 vehicles may exhibit an increased effort while turning, during low speed sharp turning maneuvers. This condition may be caused by the 4x4 control module software or an issue with the differential mounted rear ABS sensor initializing improperly (results in a reading twice as high as actual speed). The binding caused by the 4x4 control module software tends to be momentary, while the binding caused by the ABS sensor tends to be intermittent, but more continuous when occurring.

ACTION:

Follow the appropriate Service Procedure based on vehicle build date and equipment level.

SERVICE PROCEDURE 1 - 2004-2005 Explorer/Mountaineer 4x4 Vehicles Built Before 12/13/2004

NOTE:THIS PROCEDURE DOES NOT APPLY TO AWD EXPLORER/MOUNTAINEER VEHICLES.

  1. Verify the condition and monitor the transfer case clutch duty cycle PID (WDS PID: 4WDCPWMST (Units-%); NGS+ PID: PWM_DC1 (Units-%); NGS PID: PWM).

NOTE:MONITOR THE PID MULTIPLE TIMES TO VERIFY CONDITION. THE SCAN TOOL MAY MISS THE CLUTCH DUTY CYCLE SPIKE.

    1. If the duty cycle NEVER reads over 60%, reprogram the 4x4 control module to the latest level after installing WDS release B35.2 Patch 3 or higher. The patch file containing this calibration can also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com.
      • Select Module Programming from WDS menu.
      • Select 4x4 from listed modules and follow on-screen instructions.
    2. If the duty cycle PID reads over 60% continue with normal vehicle diagnosis, unless the vehicle is an Explorer 4x4 equipped with ABS (only) built from 6/8/2004 through 8/12/2004, or has been serviced in the past with rear wheel speed sensor 4L24-9E731-BB (engineering part number stamped on the side). If the vehicle meets this criteria proceed to Service Procedure 2.

NOTE:THIS NEW CALIBRATION IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE B35 CD.

NOTE:THE 4X4 MODULE IS PHYSICALLY LOCATED IN THE PCM.

SERVICE PROCEDURE 2 - 2004 Explorer 4x4 Vehicles With ABS (Only) Built 6/8/2004 Through 8/12/2004 Or Previously Serviced With Engineering Part Number 4L24-9E731-BB

NOTE:THIS PROCEDURE DOES NOT APPLY TO AWD EXPLORERS, EXPLORERS WITH ADVANCE TRAC OR MOUNTAINEERS.

  1. Verify the condition, checking for the following symptoms:

NOTE:SINCE THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT, THE VEHICLE MAY HAVE TO BE STARTED AND DRIVEN A FEW FEET MULTIPLE TIMES TO INITIATE AN INCORRECT REAR ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CALIBRATION.

    1. Transfer case clutch duty cycle PID reads 97% continuously when the bind occurs (WDS PID: 4WDCPWMST (Units-%); NGS+ PID: PWM_DC1 (Units-%); NGS PID: PWM) with 4x4 switch in Auto.
    2. The ABS module may have diagnostic trouble codes C1235, C1236 stored in memory.
    3. The rear wheel speed PID indicates twice as high as the front wheel speed PIDs.
    4. At very low speeds, the vehicle slows to a stop if the steering wheel is at full turn, and the accelerator is not depressed.
  2. If the symptoms listed above are occurring, replace the differential mounted rear ABS sensor. If not, continue with normal vehicle diagnosis.

Correct me if I am wrong, but both procedures explicitly state that they are not applicable to AWD Mountaineers, which is what my car is. See the first NOTE section under each procedure.

Yes you are correct sorry I didn't read that correctly.

Usually when you see the AWD disable it is because the transfer case is overheating but if it is doing this in the first mile or so of driving this is probably or shouldn't be the case.

It has to be a difference in readings from the wheel speed sensors. That is why I first asked you if you had changed tires recently.

It should have stored a code in the 4X4 module to give you some kind of indication what is malfunctioning.

If you do not have access to a scan tool one thing you can check without it is the tire circumferences. You can do this one of two ways. If you have a seamstress tape measure you can just wrap it around the tire and take a measurement. If you do not have one then get a piece of chalk and mark the bottom of each tire and then the pavement right below it.Then roll the vehicle until the mark on the tire comes all the way around and back down to the bottom and then mark the pavement again. Then measure the distance between the 2 marks for each tire.Make sure all of the tires are with in a half inch of each other. If you have one 3/4 to 1 inch difference this will cause the concern you have.

I think I can tell by looking that all tires have almost exactly the same tread wear, but I'll do what suggets and see. I am going to accept this answer and pay, but wonder if you have a ball-park figure on how much it might cost to bring it somewher and have the scan tool utilized? I appreciate your help and hope the rest of your day goes well.

Normally they will charge 1/2 hour to one hour labor to perform a basic diagnosis.

This should give you an idea what the problem may be. It may be something simple like one of the wheel speed sensors. If it is something more complex they may need to run more test but they should inform you before proceeding

Thanks man...take care.

One more thing if you want to chance this before taking it to a shop. See if yours has the one wheel speed sensor located in the rear differential or if it has the 2 sensors located at each wheel. If it is the single rear sensor located in the center pumpkin or rear end housing then these are known to cause problems .
