How do I change the water pump on a 2000 Merc Cougar with the 2.5Ltr. V-6?

The water pump is on the back of the engine under the engine cover and not at the front of the engine like normal. The top radiator hose will run to the thermostat.You will need to remove it anyways to access the water pump.

Water Pump - 2.5L


All vehicles

  • Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to Section 414-01.
  • Remove the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to Section 303-12B.
  • Remove the thermostat housing. For additional information, refer to Thermostat Housing-Vehicles with 2 in this section.
  • Remove the engine cover.

  • Rotate the belt tensioner clockwise by hand.

  1. Remove the belt.

Vehicles with automatic transaxle

  1. Disconnect the transmission range selector electrical connector.

All vehicles

  • Remove the water pump bolts.
  • Disconnect the coolant hose from the water pump.

  • Disconnect the heater hose and remove the water pump.

  • Remove the coolant hose.
  • Remove the water pump from the housing.
  • Discard the water pump gasket and O-ring seal
