Mercury mountaineer: the lift gate..connecting rod..disconnected

how do i open the lift gate on my mercury mountaineer 2000? The lift gate is closed and the handle feel free as if the connecting rod has broken or is disconnected. I think I need to get the lift gate open to repair the handle

You are going to have to go the hard way. You will need to remove enough trim from the inside to actuate the latch, with the hatch closed. That means removing interior trim with the door closed.

how do i remove trim with the door closed? is that possible?

It is a pain in the _ _ _ ! remove just enough to gain access, this is a rotten chore. Remove the upper wrap around trim and peel back as far as you can till you can access the latch, alot depends on the tools you have available.
