Hey! I have a 97 ml320 and I had to have a key cut and programed by a locksmith. No fob, blade only with chip. The key cranks the car and it drives but the locks all go crazy and the hazards won't stop flashing

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the fob's battery?

There is no fob

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your ML320 yourself? What have you tried so far?

Yes. Like I said had the key cut and programmed. It starts the vehicle and it drives but the hazards won't go off

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

That should be it

My name is ***** ***** I am a professional here at Just Answer. I noticed that your question had not received a response and thought I would see if you still need help with this.I apologize for the delay and I hope I can still assist you with this here.

The first thing that needs to be done here is to have the fault codes read out/checked to see what codes are set to this issue here. This has to be done with a scan tool or computer plugged into your model that can read all computers in your vehicle.Once this is done any codes set then need to be diagnosed to then locate and repair this issue here.Usually having a new key won't cause these issues with the locks and hazards. It sounds like a fault with a control unit acting up or issue with a loose power or ground input. If you can get the codes read out and post the code info here this will help just let me know.

If more help is needed, use the reply tab to continue our conversation. If no further assistance is needed, kindly rate my service, your 5-star rating is appreciated ( should be a link to click on here or above). You can rate at any time and we can continue to work on your question as this will not close out your question.Keep in mind in some cases it can be difficult to fully diagnose or help repair your vehicle without seeing it and I work on delivering the best possible answer from what I see to work with.

Thanks Pete

Pete seemed to be more interested in my rating than getting the answer to my question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Gotcha, ok so does the fob lock and unlock the doors ?
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Lets go over a few basics to see what is going on .
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
There is no fob. Lost the keys. No extras. Had new one cut. It starts the car but the hazards and locks and radio go crazy as if it's a security system issue
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Ok, so only the hazards should flash along with alarm.
So when do the locks go crazy?
When you start the car or when you drive off or when you lock the doors ?
Also was everything fine up until this new key? Can you send me a picture of it ?
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
There was no key when I got it. It was towed to my house. The lights do this when I start the car. I don't know if the horn works so that may be going off too and I don't know it. The car starts and drives but the hazards won't go off and the locks keep going offand it never accelerates fully (maybe unrelated).
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Ok sounds like you have a whole slew of problems. Lets talk about the locks, when do they act up?
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
At the same time as the lights when the car is started
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Ok, so i thing we have a power supply problem. I am currently commuting i will be back soon
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Ok so in my experience and thought its not the alarm or else the car would not start. Does this happen when the key is turned to the first ignition position? The second position? Or only when the car is running?
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
It happens in all key positions
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
I read somewhere that if there is another key somewhere in or on the vehicle then the two signals would make it act up
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Ok, so then i would be interested in powers and grounds and checking for water marks inside the drivers side engine bay fuse box
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Also the only thing inside the car that recognizes a key is the ring around the ignitikn switch. Nothing else. So no two signals are not affecting anything. Also if there were a security issue the car would start and then die. I think the from AAM module which is actually attached to the underside of your fuse box eithet got damaged or has water in it .
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
How do I address these issues so that I can drive down the road without the flashers on?
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Ok so it all depends on if you know how to work on cars and what we can do to fix this. Would definitely need a test light and possibly a meter but a test light is always helpful. We would need to see where the signal is coming from.
We would need to pull a few relays to see if it will stop the flashing lights and locks. The relays are all labeled under the lid of the engine bay fuse box
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Let's say I don't know how to work on cars but I'm good at following directions. I'd be happy to rate you and you don't have to wait on any more responses from me if you could just walk me through what comes after checking the relays.
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
No worries I am in no hurry for rating even though you might be getting emails about it so no worries there and as far as following directions we can do some simple things to try without needing expensive equipment
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
I am not near my computer currently but is soon as I am in the next few hours I will go over the wire diagram and give you some things to try if you could I will need the build date of your car off of the sticker on the driver side door
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago

OK SO relay K15, K20, K23,K24

all affect locking and unlocking, so lets pull one at a time to see if the lock issue changes.

like first pull out k15 and turn the key on, if the issue does not change, put it back and then remove k20 and recheck, so on and so forth.

lets see if we can get the locks to stop cycling.

for the hazards i will check.

Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago

K7 and K4 are for the turn signals left and right.

i am not sure if there is an additional relay but i am still checking

the signals are actuated by the aam module.

aam stands for all activity module

i think the module is faulty myself.

Lou

Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago

what i want you to do with the k4 and k7 relays are the same as the other, take one out turn the key on and see what changed.

then reinsert it and take the other one out and then turn the key back on and see what changes.

Lou

ok i see something that sparks my interest.

Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago

the corner of the fuse box near the red wires , there is a missing relay next to the big 40 amp fuse, it looks like there is green powder around the connections on the top of the fuse box.

let me know if you see what i am talking about,

also did you remove the covers or were they already loose?

Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
They were already loose.
I'm going to check the powder situation now

How do I get the anti theft to stop?
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Pick up the fuse box and you will see a black module box hanging off the side, i want you to unplug a few connections one at a time and see if there is green or white powder or corrosion on the terminals
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Okay how do I pick up the fuse box? Should it be loose?
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
