can you give me the rundown of what you did?

Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
only thing we did is check and flush the transmission fluid.
When you put the car in drive it makes a humming/pumping noise but does not move
Once you put it back in park it makes a clicking noise/grinding noise
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago

I think theres a bulletin on this too . Checking for that as well, maybe something with a broken snap ring or landing on a drum
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Check to see if the trans selector is set to C for comfort or S for sport and if so check both settings to see if the trans had power flow in either
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Ok did not see a bulletin but will keep checking, also did the car come to you this way or did this happen after a repair ?
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Came this way... it just stopped on driver
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
If the trans makes a grinding noise when put into park that tells me that the trans is moving . The parking pawl slapping the wheel is what makes the grinding noise.
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
What i would do is see if the car rolls on the ground in park then see if you can spin the wheels on the rack in park, we have seen the nut for the read driveshaft to trans come loose so the rear output shaft can spin inside of the coupler that bolts to the flex disc. We need to verify that both shafts are locked in park, the front and rear driveshaft. If not then its possible the fault is inside the transfer case
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Since you hear noises and it grinds when putting it into park theres literally a mechanical malfunction with the power flow . So i would suspect either something broke in the transfer case or with the output shaft nut on the rear driveshaft. So let me know what you see or find .
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
ok upon further inspection the front driveshaft is broken.. I will attach a pictures

That is very interesting
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Idk its completely loose you can move with your hand
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
The driveshaft slides over a toothed splined shaft that is kinds like a cv joint in a sense. It can wiggle and angle. I wonder how that happened maybe you can slide the shaft back toward the trans? This is a one in a million type of failure lol
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
But hey at least we got results!!
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
lol we always get the problem car
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Wondering would this cause the car not to move and also cause all the noises we are hearing
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Umm, well i did explain in a past message that a broken driveshaft would cause this as all the torque is going to the spinning shaft
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Thats what led me to a possible broken driveshaft is that the parking pawl would machine gun before slapping into place. Which told me a output shaft was spinning or there was major internal damage
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Well i never said broken driveshaft so ill strike that from the record lol

But you feel me
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
yea... I got ya
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
I would remove the shaft and make sure the coupler inside the transfer case is ok, looks to me like it was removed at some point and the protective rubber boot was never installed . So let me know if you end up needing more help. Nice job !
And yes you always seem to get the problem child cars lol. But they always get fixed. Please take a second and click the stars at the top of the screen to rate my service so I may receive my credit for helping, 5 STARS is ideal. Please request me in the future! Keep in mind that when you rate it does NOT end our conversation, you can still return here to me for follow up information if needed just simply reply back, THANKS! the driveshaft snap... so I'm wondering if the transfer case is going to be good
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
Where is it snapped ? Its hard for me to tell
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
The inside of the transfer case is geared and then theres a clutch for the rear output shaft. Its very easy to pull apart however the transfer case is part of the trans so if a new driveshaft doesnt fix it then they need a trans . :(
Ask Your Own Mercedes Question
Customer reply replied 4 months ago
Do you happen to have removal directions for the front drive shaft
Mercedes Mechanic: Lou P. master tech, Mercedes Technician replied 4 months ago
sorry for the delay, i will get them over to you. Will be a little later today. Essentially remove the exhaust, undue to shaft from the front diff and then jack up the trans to be able to slide it off and forward . But ill send over the factory stuff soon as i can
