Customer Question
When replacing a tire...

When replacing a tire on a Mercedes Benz E-class 4matic: is it true that all four tires must be replaced?

Mechanic's Assistant: How old are the tires? And have they been a problem in the past?

I purchased a 2014 certified car with 24000 miles. One day after, the front passenger tire does not maintain the proper air pressure. Upon reviewing the CARFAX after purchase, I see that over the prior 2 months prior to sale the dealership had twice replace a single tire on two separate occassions WITHOUT replacing the other 3 tires. Is that not a problem and should the dealership replace ALL 4 tires. This is my first M-B. Help!

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your E-Class yourself? What have you tried so far?

Well, no. We are expecting the dealership to remedy my concern by replacing all 4 tires. M-B is position is that MB's are different and there is no reason to worry about different thread depth when replacing a single tire on what is an AWD car

This is a certified MB that I only purchased a few days ago. It had one owner.....lease. Even if the differential was small, would the differential increase over time because front and rear tires loss thread at a different pace?

Good evening, I hope you are doing well! My name is ***** ***** I would be happy to assist.

Anytime you have an AWD system you have to be careful when replacing tires. There can not be more than a 2/32nd difference in tread wear if you are replacing single tires. Any greater difference in size and it can start to affect the AWD system as well as the abs/traction control systems.

I would advise to overlook your purchaser's agreement/pre-delivery inspection form and see if they ever recorded the tread depth when the tires were replaced

You may have overlooked my major concern. The MB dealership position is that the AWD system in MBs cars is designed to allow single tires to be replaced without replacing the other 3 tires. Is my MB dealership correct?

That specific dealership may be saying that now to cover themselves. As bad as it sounds they most likely did not want to put more money than they deemed necessary into a used car when their goal was to sell, it's an unfortunate truth I have seen in too many places.

I always recommend my customers replace their tires at the same time, it gets expensive, but that is the price of driving luxury/quality vehicles these days
