This is happening because the transmission control module has seen a failure and set fault codes. There are many possible causes for the transmission going into limp in including speed sensors, solenoids, internal transmission problems, and the trans controller itself can definitely be the cause. The first step in diagnosing the problem is to see what codes have set and then testing can be done from there as necessary. If they've gone through proper diagnostics and have arrived at the TCM needing to be replaced I would have no reason to doubt that.
