Customer Question

Hi Pearl, My mercedes vito van (2005), automatic is in limp mode. What can I do to fix it?
JA: Are you hoping to fix this yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Took it to nearest garage that are not specialists in gearboxes. They said I need the whole unit replaced.
JA: Anything else you think the mechanic should know?
Customer: Well, I just wanted to check if anything else can be done before I start buying new parts and spend on labour.
JA: Will the headlights turn on? Is the battery fully charged?
Customer: Everything else is working just fine. Dashboard though does not show what gear I am in.

Hi, I’m Ron and I’ll be helping you today.
Before we get started though, Please understand that I don't know
your skill level or tools you have to assist us. Also understand that
I can't see, smell, hear, or touch the vehicle either, so patience is
appreciated. JA is a great Q/A site, but it does NOT replace a
repair shop.
My goal is to make you happy and get a great rating in return for
my time. Sometimes I have to give you bad news that I know you
didn’t want to hear, so please don’t shoot the messenger.

My advice is to get a qualified shop with the qualified scan tool to scan the complete computer system for data and possible codes being set. This can be a very simple repair too, not ALL repairs are expensive, but we do need to address the problem with the right tool.

Thanks, Ron

your advice now for me is to take it to the garage?
Expert:  rpmdiag replied 1 year ago.

Well, the reason for this is that your computer system is what's locking you down right now and the only way to see why is to talk to the computer.

Thanks again, and please don't forget to rate me and keep this link in case you need me again later on.
