Hello Simon and Welcome!
I'm Billy and i will assist you with your inquiry.
Feel free to ask if any further info is needed.

The low fuel might cause some mild misfiring, causing the engine light to go on.

To make sure, and as the car is newly bought, i would have it connected to the diagnostic computer (scan tool), to retrieve the fault codes, and erase them.
Keep the fault codes written with you, as if the light goes on again, and you have the same codes, then they would need diagnosing, to find out what the problem is, and adjusting as necessary.

Most likely (if the previous owners did not have any problems) the check engine light will stay off, once the codes are erased. If not, you can get back to me with the codes, as i can explain these, and tell you what and how to check to pinpoint the culprit.
