Our power steering went out. This was after a bad smell

Customer Question

Hi, our power steering went out. This was after a bad smell coming from the engine that we first thought was brakes, additionally after stopping we were not able to start the car.

Hi, it sounds like the serpentine belt has broken or come off of the pulleys. I'd open the hood and inspect the belt and see if it is loose. If the belt is secure I would check the power steering fluid level but if you also cannot start the car I suspect that the belt may have come off and your battery eventually died because the alternator was not turning.
