Mercedes C180 I have a C class 180 SE - the engine turns over

This answer was rated:

I have a C class 180 SE - the engine turns over heavily and rattlers when started(Ithought it was an exhaust problem, but the garage reacons not) and splutters in low gears - any ideas?

MB Paul :

Hi - can you tell where the rattle is coming from? Does the gears shift ok? Does the engine surge or run rough at idle? Has the car been checked for fault codes yet?

MB Paul :

Best regards, Paul

Customer:

Feels like an engine movement. Gears OK; idleing speed can be a bit irratic sometimes - increases to about 1100 rpm. 12 month service in January this year. Are fault codes a garage thing?

Customer:

Appreciate your help

MB Paul :

Hi - fault codes would need to be checked with a diagnostic tool, I would recommend this first if the engine is erratic. A common problem with noise & vibration can be the V belt tensioner - if this is worn it can cause a chattering noise & juddering through the belt drive. A common problem with engine running problems can be with a split breather hose under the air filter housing - see the following pictures for location:
