Hello. I’ve been really struggling lately and I’ve felt this way on and off for the past couple years. I excessively worry and sometimes feel delusional, like I can’t be in the present and I’m always worrying about things that don’t matter. What can I do?

Doctor's Assistant: The Psychologist can help. Just a couple quick questions before I transfer you. How long have you been concerned about delusions? Have you used any medication for this?

I have not used any medications. And I do not know if they are delusions, I’m just always in my head and can’t seem to get out of it

Doctor's Assistant: How have you been sleeping? Any changes in appetite?

I sleep fine at night but I take a long nap every day. No changes in appetite

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the Psychologist should know?

I’ve never seen a psychologist so I have no mental health history but anxiety and depression runs in my family a bit

Hey there Sarah, nice to *meet* you. So theres no quick fix here, and no medication that can help this, but sometimes we sort of get in our head when we are overwhelmed, or have too much that has added up. Have you ever thought about trying to find a therapist?

I havent heard back from you, but some tips for finding for a provider to get evaluated, diagnosed, and treated for mental health disorders:

1. You could request your primary care doctor to refer you to a mental health service. This is one of their main jobs to coordinate your care and find you the professionals you need. Family doctors are NOT mental health professionals, and I generally advise people to see a specialist, as you wouldn’t expect your family doctor to remove a tooth, you wouldn’t want them directing mental health care.

2. Contact your local community or county mental health services. You may get resources for individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, or other support groups. The county keeps a relationship with all mental health clinics, so they will know all programs that are available and which each office offers.

3. You could find your own provider directly. I like the directory psychologytoday.com and therapyden.com You can find a local provider and search by specialty and insurance that they take. If you do NOT have insurance, OpenPath.org is a VERY reputable site that takes sliding scale payments from $40-70 dollars per session. Therapy Den also has some providers that offer a sliding scale.

4. Contact your health insurance company – if you have health insurance – you can call the 800 number on the back of your insurance card or use their insurance portal. You can search to find providers that are authorized to take your insurance
