The brain does change both during the process of depression and following treatment and remission of the psychiatric symptoms. I will provide a link that provides a very good overview of the impact of depression on the brain; as it is a lot to type and this website provides a good overview. The important thing to recognize is that the brain is malleable and changes over time (the old thought was that damage to the brain was permanent and irreversible). Neuroplasticity is the term used to describe how the brain changes and adapts over time to various changes; both good and bad. Feel free to reply with any further questions if you have any.
