Hi. i am a 49 year old male. i take lithium and seroquel. been taking lithium for 26 years. my knees started hurting about 2 months ago progressing to lots of pain when i work. could this be lithium related?

Doctor's Assistant: What seems to make the symptoms worse or better? Have you noticed any swelling?

No visible swelling just tight knees when i bend to the ground

Doctor's Assistant: Anything else in your medical history you think the psychologist should know?

I have back pain. that is stenosis though. i am pretty healthy other wise. just wonder if its the lithium or something else

i did a month ago. they were in the normal range. i cant tell you exactly what they were. i see my normal doc in three months. i was just wandering about the knees. i think it arthritis
Mental Health Professional: Dr. Kaushik, Psychiatrist replied 7 months ago
I would say you first get your kidney function test done including serum uric acid to rule
out gout which also affects the knee joint most commonly and your RA factor tested to rule out Rheumatoid arthritis. You see even if the serum lithium levels came out to be normal but lithium is known to be a nephrotoxic substance meaning it adversely affects the kidneys and their functioning so indirectly lithium could be affecting your knees if the uric acid levels are raised and kidney function test is abnormal. In such case lithium needs to be withdrawn.
I hope this makes sense and gives you a sense of direction to move in.
Wish you all the best.
Please kindly leave a POSITIVE RATING if you are satisfied with the answer.

Suggested diagnosis was what I hoped and will take this info to my doctor's appointment next week.
I feel better already! Thank you.

ElanorTracy, CA

Thank you to the Physician who answered my question today. The answer was far more informative than what I got from the Physicians I saw in person for my problem.

JulieLockesburg, AR

You have been more help than you know. I seriously don't know what my sisters situation would be today if you had not gone above and beyond just answering my questions.

John and StefanieTucson, AZ

I have been dealing with an extremely serious health crisis for over three years, and one your physicians asked me more questions, gave me more answers and encouragement than a dozen different doctors who have been treating me!!
