I have a friend who says she has DID but she doesn't meet the criteria. Her alters are dead people. Mostly characters from Movies or Musicals like Phantom of the Opera. Would this behavior be a symptom of delusional disorder or fantasy prone personality disorder? Or something else. I think she truly believes she really is all these different people sometimes even saying she is both the man and the man's children. I know she doesn't have DID but i don't know in which direction I should lean towards to research more to get her the right help.

Ask Your Own Mental Health Question

One question: Has she ever had a psychological evaluation?

While I cannot offer a diagnostic impression given I haven't met her, it sounds like you may want to research Borderline Personality Disorder. Some of the aspects you've mentioned above sound like client's I've worked with who thought they had DID but really had borderline PD.

If someone truly believes they have DID, they must find the right therapist who will build trust with them and will allow the individual to then begin exploring what the diagnosis means to them - versus just saying they don't have it. It sounds like your friend may have an especially fragile ego and therefore would benefit from therapeutic services with someone who does psychoanalytic work or interpersonal therapy. Anything anyone says to her that is different from what her actual experiences are, she will likely not believe and will further alienate herself from people she's friends with and/or people she loves; hence, the type of therapy she currently needs. You can tell her till you're blue in the face she's not DID and she will continue to believe such diagnosis (especially if a professional told her this, as it again sounds like her core sense of self is damaged).

After reading - https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/borderline-personality-disorder/index.shtml - does this sound like your friend?

She has been evaluated but never actually took any of the tests. No, the symptoms of BPD do not sound like her. She is fully functional and no mood swings. She does have trouble keeping friends but that is usually because she prefers to be characters and not herself. Her core sense of self is very damaged. I can't figure out why Phantom of the Opera and Titanic are so significant to her. No therapist has ever told her she had DID. She is self diagnosed. So we should look for someone who does psychoanalytic work or interpersonal therapy? Is there a place we can use those words to try and find a therapist for her?

Hm, okay - that's interesting. The individual with BPD can be fully functional and don't always have to have the mood swings (that's just a very common aspect of the diagnosis). The other diagnosis that came to mind was Schizotypal PD (https://psychcentral.com/disorders/schizotypal-personality-disorder-symptoms/).

Yes, there's a webpage and I would still suggest someone with this type of training. You can look on psychology today (https://www.psychologytoday.com/) which you can then specify your location and the type of therapy.
