So from your description of the events, your child typically will scream and cry when she is separated from you initially, but after a while she adjusts and plays with her nanny, is this correct?
Dr. Z :
Also when you return after a significant length of the time of being away, usually a few hours, how does your child respond?
Customer:
She is fine when I come home, smiling and ready to show me what they are doing. Then several hours later she is at her norm. playing, etc
Customer:
yes, she is initially upset, but stops crying quickly. Maybe after a couple of minutes.
Customer:
The nanny says after her nap she starts crying again when she wakes up and sees her instead of me.
Dr. Z :
Okay so after a couple minutes she stops crying and is happy to see you when you come home, then yes this is perfectly natural and does not amount to any type of separation anxiety, which would include more lasting fear and crying throughout the time you are gone. Even her crying after her naps is okay, as this is part of her adjustment process.
Dr. Z :
So far you have not told me anything that is considered psychologically harmful to the child. As for "unnatural" that is dependent on your own parenting techniques and how you view the parent-child relationship. Some would view it as unnatural and others would view it as natural, but it is based on a personal perspective.
Dr. Z :
I can tell you though that what you are describing is not psychologically harmful to the child and it sounds like she is very well-adjusted for her age based on this
Dr. Z :
If she cried and had frequent temper tantrums while you are gone than I would say that is a case of separation anxiety that needs to be addressed as that can be psychologically harmful, although not deliberately.

From what I understand, she is generally happy during the day.

I will try to find out if there are more frequent temper tantrums whn I am gone. Are there any other signs I should look for?
Dr. Z :
Usually intense anxiety and worry before leaving as an anticipation is a sign, and also when you return she may act irritable towards you because she blames you for leaving and is upset with you.
Dr. Z :
But from what you are telling me it does not sound like she is in psychological distress, which is a good sign

Ok. There is some anxiety before I leave. But she is definitely not angry with me when I come back. I guess i'm looking for a clear indicator of a problem maybe there isn't one.
Dr. Z :
Some anxiety is okay, it would be have to truly distressing and overwhelming anxiety in anticipation of you leaving
Dr. Z :
Honestly I am not trying to give you false hope, but it does not sound like there is anything wrong with your daughter from a psychological stand point
