This is what i have so far.

My preferred theory of counseling is typically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, I like to use both of them.

My style in the supervisory relationship differs with each student, some need more hand-holding and other like more independence, so I try to fit their style that makes them more comfortable and work best. I also try to present my students with cases outside of their comfort zone to give them differing experience. I also like to present different devil’s advocate questions to help the students think about differing therapy modalities and diagnoses.

I structure supervision by following a strict schedule in my office. It is considered casual in terms of the relationship, but I like my students to come prepared and to talk for the whole hour.

Interventions used during supervision are the usual one on one individual supervision and group supervision, but I also like for my students to present three case conferences and overall project at the end for all the staff and this can be about anything related to psychology (e.g. a presentation, new therapy modality to introduce staff to, etc..).

The expectations of the supervisor and supervisee relationship is one of professionalism, where I will listen to the students and adjust and adapt to their needs. I want my students to look to me to help them with questions or concerns that they may have, but also for them to know that I will not always give them a direct answer, but want them to think about different solutions to differing problems. I expect my students to listen to me and to do the work in a timely and professional manner and if they cannot than to let me know, so I can lighten their load and if some students are very fast, then they should tell me too, so that I can assign them more work. I want my students eager to learn, and also to have a good time as well because this is not just a job, but a career path too and I want them to enjoy it.

I evaluate the practicum students twice a year, and the interns 4 times a year (I see the interns more than the practicum students), and I have a worksheet with rating scales that I use and send to the respective schools. I will give feedback on the rating and how the students can improve on these in certain areas and what they are doing well in. I will ask other staff how the student is doing, I review their work, and I also sit in on testing and therapy sessions as well to evaluate them.

I learned how to be a supervisor from my pre-doctoral internship and post-doc as well by watching how my supervisors worked and how it was an excellent learning environment for me. I tried to model that and make changes as well. I also attended a few presentations on being an effective supervisor as well and learned some good tips as well. But mostly being a good supervisor comes from experience and learning that it is okay to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes.
