how does a husband handle a situation when a wife of 27 years walks out for the above r
reason after what appeared to be a 27 year great marriage
What did she tell you about why she left? Your question says "for the above reason" but there is nothing above.

she feels put upon from always being there for everyone else- now wants to find herself

Many women get stuck in the role of taking care of too many things for too many people in their lives. To save a relationship like yours, there needs to be an acknowledgment that somethings have to change. If you can find out what she wants to be different in her life, you may be able to come to an understanding of the role you could play. Also, in some situations like this, depression plays a large part. Depressed people often feel angry and hopeless about their lives. The only avenue they see open to them is to throw everything out and start over. I wouldn't necessarily ask her if she's depressed, but if she is talking about her feeling and she's angry, sad, helpless, hopeless, you might say,"those sound like depressed feelings."
